Paddy Barnes : The Only Person That Can Beat Me Is Myself

by Paddy Appleton

Paddy Barnes is raring to go for his Olympic Qualifier in Turkey at the start of next month.

We talked to Barnes yesterday and the Belfast light-flyweight said he cannot wait to get in the ring in Trabzon come April.

He is confident that his preparation will see him come through the final European qualifier and the training in Germany has prepared him well for the tough fights ahead.

“Training has been going extremely well, I am in great condition. The sparring that I am getting here in Germany is amazing. I’ve been sparring with Mongolia, Germany and Brazil and I am sure it will pay off in April.

“I really am confident in the run up to this qualifier as I have left no stone unturned in my preparation, the only person that can beat me is myself.”

The Holy Family boxer will come up against some seasoned fighters in Turkey, however he knows that focusing on his own abilities and not those of other fighters is the key to success.

“I’ve learned over the years that you cant single out one or two single threats. It’s boxing, if you’re not focused then you can lose to anyone!”

Barnes has a tough assignment coming up in April and he will be desperate to enjoy an Olympic summer again, having done Ireland so proud four years ago in Beijing bringing home bronze.

He is adamant he will be at the Olympics this summer following success in Turkey, and the Irish boxing fraternity will be hoping so too.
