Magee to make it Ireland 2 Denmark 0-

by Jonny Stapleton

Pat Magee has backed Brian Magee to beat Rudy Markussen in Copenhagen tomorrow night to make it Ireland 2 Denmark 0 and leave the Danish fight fans clamouring for revenge.

The WBA interim super middleweight manager is confident Magee further upset the locals when he registers his second win on Danish soil, having already dispatch of Mads Larsen in EBU title fight over a year ago.

Indeed the Belfast based boxing manager hopes the Danes will be so upset the will call on the Great Boxing Dane Mikkel Kessler to get revenge.

“If Brian wins this weekend its Denmark 0 Ireland 2 and we hope that will lead in the direction of Kessler.  Kessler is a massive name and that would be a mega fight. If Brian bears Markussen there is no doubt the Danish fans will be clamouring for Kessler to get their revenge. Not too mention Lucian Bute and Andre Ward are tied up so Brain is the obvious  choice for Kessler and why wouldn’t we take Kessler on.” Magee told Irish Boxing Radio.

A Kessler bout would be the masterpiece in the recent Magee’s renaissance. The Belfast pro seemed on the verge of retirement just two years ago but seems to be enjoying and Indian summer of late and his manager hopes he registers a few more wins before riding of into the sunset content.

“We are enjoying a bit of a renaissance. All the calls are incoming now and our phone bill is down. We are not ringing around trying to get Brian fights and that’s the benefit of the having a title. Brain has been in bad luck stakes before so we are going to enjoy this time. Hopefully he can cap out his career, put a lot of money in the bank and ride of into the sunset over the next two years.”

Team Magee only announced the Markussen fight four weeks ago, but manager Pat Magee is adamant his charge’s preparations have not been affected. The former European and British champion has been training with the Dane in mind since September even if a deal wasn’t signed till January.

“Preparation went perfect. The late announcement of the fight didn’t effect his preparation. Notified of the fight in September lengthy discussions but we always knew the fight would happen. So he has been preparing since last September.”
