Lindsay on future

7 May 2011 – Jonny Stapleton

Irish boxing’s forgotten man Martin Lindsay has assured his concerned fans he is planning a memorable 2011.

News from camp Lindsay has been scarce since the featherweight lost his British title to John Simpson last December, but the Belfast pro claims he is eager to return to action and is awaiting news of his next innings. Patience is a virtue the Belfast pro has had to show throughout his career and it seems it is an attribute he will have to employ again as he tries to secure a prestigious title shot. The 28 year old University graduate claims he is still on the title ladder despite admitting his defeat to tough Scot Simpson in the Kings Hall has knocked him down a few rungs.

Speaking to www.irish-boxing.com Lindsay claimed his belt ambitons are still alive and revealed he is planning another title raid.

I am still going and I am keeping myself fit. I am just waiting on news of my next fight. I had to wait at times even when I was the champion so I just have to be patient again. Basically I am waiting for a fight, Lindsay said.

Defeat to Simpson may have knocked me down the rankings a bit but I am there or there about in both the British and European rankings. I believe I can win either belt and I am eager to fight for them. There are big fights still there for me. I am happy to fight anyone with a belt. I would also fight Simpson again if that was a fight SKY would approve and wanted that pairing. I am not sure what is happening with the European title, the reigning champ hasnt defended in a year and I would love to fight for that title too. My title ambitions are still alive.

The Ulsterman may get one of the fights he desires as Frank Warren named him in a list of potential opponents for reigning British and Commonwealth champion Stephen Smith. Lindsay wasnt aware he was on the Joe Gallagher trained Liverpool boxers radar, but stressed that is a fight he would take and one he would be confident of winning.

I am confident of beating Simpson in a rematch or Smith if I was put in against them. There is no point in being here if you dont think you can win. I didnt know until now, Frank Warren said I was a potential opponent for Smith. My thinking was Simpson would be easier to make because he is with Frank Malone. But if Warren wants to make that fight I am more that willing to take it.
