World title eliminator in the pipeline for Joe Smith Jr
Irish-American light heavyweight Joe Smith Jr [22(18)-1(1)] is in-line for a WBC World title eliminator in the near future.
The Long Island puncher scored a shock one-round victory over fancied Pole Andrzej Fonfara last month and is set to be rewarded with a title eliminator for Adonis Stevenson’s crown.
Top Rank head-honcho Bob Arum revealed after the Terrence Crawford-Viktor Postol bout at the weekend that he is set to make a fight between ‘The Irish Bomber’ and Ukranian sensation Oleksandr Gvozdyk [11(9)-0], who fought on the undercard at the MGM Grand on Saturday.
Gvozdyk, an Olympic bronze medalist, underwent the first real trouble of his career in his bout with Tommy Karpency, being knocked down in the first, but quickly regained control and forced a sixth round stoppage.
