World Championships Day 1 Preview
Three of Ireland’s young guns will get the Emerald Isle underway tomorrow at the 18th edition of the AIBA World Amateur Boxing Championships in Doha Qatar.
Brendan Irvine, Dean Walsh and Michael O’Reilly will all feature in last-32 bouts in the evening session at the 7,700 seater Ali Bin Hamas Al Attiya Arena-Al Sadd.
Boxing gets underway at 5:00pm (Irish Time)
Belfast light flyweight Brendan Irvine opens his campaign with a bout against Nico Hernandez of the USA. The Kansas boxer won bronze in the recent American Continental Championships.
Wexford’s Dean Walsh fights Luis Diaz of Venezuela. A quarter-finalist in the last World Championships, the 23 year old South American won bronze in both the Pan-American Games and the American Continental Championships this year.
Michael O’Reilly faces a tough task against Valerii Kharlamov of the Ukraine. The East European fighter reached the quarter finals of the European Championships this year – a tournament O’Reilly was ineligible for due to winning gold at the European Games.
