Women Boxing Increasing Popularity

Boxing has long been a very male dominated sport, both in terms of professionals and people taking part for fun and fitness. For many people it’s seen as a male only activity but over recent times that has started to change. Boxing is a sport that anyone can take part in in order to, not only compete but to get fit too; and this is one of the reasons why the number of female participants is finally on the rise, and they now make up for nearly a quarter of those boxing at least once a week.

There’s no doubting that Britain really is on the map in terms of boxing in general, especially with numerous belt holders in the ranks and this goes a long way in boosting the popularity of the sport on the whole. This trend has been confirmed with TV audiences figures and even an up take on sports betting activity on sites like unibet.com.

Now women have the likes of Olympic gold medallists turned pro fighters Nicola Adams and Ireland’s Katie Taylor as a source of inspiration. It’s a sign to many females that boxing isn’t just for men and isn’t just a way to keep fit, there’s plenty of chances to compete and to even go on to turn professional.

A huge part in the rise of females taking part in boxing is the efforts put in by boxing clubs and coaches to welcome more female members than ever before, challenging the perception that boxing is a man’s only sport. Latest figures show that women are believed to make up around 21% of boxing participants in England with a rise of over 11,000 taking part over a six month period. This means that there are around 35,000 female participants in the country who take part at least once a week and the growth rate is not too dissimilar to that of their male counterparts.

The amount of people wanting to get fit has never been higher, with huge numbers of women regularly visiting the gym or taking part in classes in order to improve their health and wellbeing. Boxing fitness classes, sometimes referred to as boxercise, are a hugely popular way for people to rapidly improve their fitness. Boxercise involves all of the training you’d expect boxers to go through and is effective due to boxing requiring extremely high fitness levels and endurance.

With female boxing now getting more of the spotlight than ever before, in terms of professionals and their fights being shown live on tv; and the fact that boxercise and boxing classes are now more geared towards female participants, it’s no wonder that the amount of women boxing is on the rise. Not only that but with women now able to compete at the Olympics and various championships around the world, it gives them something to really aim for if they are looking to take up the sport on a serious level. There’s always been the rivalry between men and women too in the sense of “whatever you can do, we can do better” and now female boxers are out to prove that that really is the case.
