Weigh-in and title drama ahead of Celtic Clash 6 card
There has been drama ahead of the weigh-in to ‘Celtic Clash 6’ this afternoon.
An open-to-the-public weigh-in takes place at 2:00pm at SBG Tallaght but, before a boxer has stepped on the scales, there has been some changes made.
Carl McDonald [3(0)-2(0)] and Colin O’Donovan [1(1)-2(1)-1] were due to fight for the vacant BUI Celtic super bantamweight title tomorrow night at Good Counsel GAA Club in Drimnagh but it has emerged this morning that O’Donovan will be unable to make the 122lbs weight limit.
The Cork fighter boxed Stephen McAfee last time out for the super featherweight (130lbs) equivalent and dropping down two classes has proved too much for ‘The Rebel Rouser’.
It is not bad news, however – the clash between O’Donovan and McDonald will still go ahead and some manoeuvring has ensured that it will still be for a title.
BUI Celtic featherweight champion Eric Donovan [7(4)-0], who also fights on the bill, has agreed to vacate his title to allow his Boxing Ireland Promotions stablemates to fight for a belt at the new weight of 126lbs.
O’Donovan, naturally, has grabbed this chance with both hands while McDonald too has agreed to step up in weight.
The Boxing Union of Ireland confirmed the switch this morning.
Donovan won the belt versus Welsh veteran Dai Davies last September before defending it against an overweight Juancho Gonzalez.
The Kildare puncher is keen to fight for the Irish title before moving on to continental belt and this morning’s title change may even produce a potential opponent for a title fight.
Colin O’Donovan this morning informed the BUI that he could not make the Super Bantamweight limit for his title fight with Carl McDonald. @eric_donovan60 has since informed us that he was willing to give up his Celtic Featherweight title to allow both man to fight for that.

Carl McDonald was happy to fight O’Donovan at the heavier weight and the BUI have now sanctioned that bout. Carl McDonald will now fight Colin O’Donovan for the BUI Celtic Featherweight title tomorrow subject to producing blood tests. Weigh in at 2pm at SBG Tallaght
