Weekend Round up: McDonnagh becomes Irish Champ and more

JJ McDonnagh followed in his little brothers footsteps by becoming an Irish champion in Brighton on Saturday night.

The Westmeath fighter retired four time Irish title challenger Lee Murtagh in round seven to claim the Irish super middleweight title.

The win also see’s the older of the two boxing brothers secure a spot on the Belfast May 5 Prizefighter.

Anthony Fitzgerald also registered victory on the Assassin Promotions card. ‘The Pride’ defeated Alexey Ribchev by a single round in his first fight in 11 months.

The EBA middleweight champion and Prizefighter bound fighter believes he won by a wider margin, but did admit a the fighter, who holds a win over former British and Commonwealth champion Matthew Hall, provided him a stern test.

There was no joy for Belfast Ciaran Healy last night as he took to the ring against Enzo Maccarinelli. The tough veteran was sent crashing to the canvas twice by WBO cruiserweight king in their Motor Point Arena Cardiff clash.
