Weekend Round-Up: March 10th-11th
It was a busy weekend for Irish boxing, with the biggest show of the year so far taking place at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast on Friday.
The BoxNation cameras were in town for the twelve-fight ‘Belfast Boys Are Back’ card which featured 15 Irish fighters.
However, aside from the high drama in the Titanic City, there were other Irish boxers in action.
On the same night at the Shaw Conference Centre in Canada, there were two Wild Geese in action. Canadian lightweight title chaser ‘Irish’ Cam O’Connell [15(10)-0-1] scored a fourth round stoppage of Oscar Barajas Grano, while young Mike ‘The Phoenix’ McWilliams [6(2)-0-3] scored a four-round points win over Arturo Garcia Lujano.
On Saturday at the Harvey Hadden Sports Village in Nottingham there was double disappointment as two-time Irish light middleweight title challenger Terry Maughan [10(0)-7(6)-1] was outpointed over four by tough journeyman Kevin McCauley, while Drogheda-Tideswell middle Tommy Carter [1(0)-5(3)] was stopped in the first by Kyle Haywood.
Sadly there were also two last minute cancellations. Dublin cruiser Ian Tims [12(3)-3(2)] saw his rescheduled fight date in Scotland on Saturday fall through, while Roscommon welterweight Ollie Towey [1(0)-2(2)] had his fight in Australia on Friday cancelled due to his opponent’s inability to make weight.
