Weekend Preview: October 21st-22nd
Despite the postponement of Tommy McCarthy v Matty Askin, there is still plenty of action lined up in Britain this weekend as we patiently build towards the massive November 5th fight night which will feature 25 Irish boxers.
Starting up off on Friday October 21st is the Prospect Boxing show at the Alona Hotel in Motherwell where Donegal light welter Shaun McShane [4(0)-3(0)-1] challenges Eddie Doyle for the Scottish title in a rematch of their controversial clash earlier this year. In addition to the headliner, there is also Irish interest on the undercard as Stephen ‘Shortty’ Carroll [3(0)-0] keeps busy against Giuseppe Daprato. Also featuring is Ulster journeyman Casey Blair [3(0)-15(3)] who faces Scotch prospect Michael McGurk.
On Saturday, Swindon-Donegal super middle Jamie Cox [20(12)-0] makes his return to the ring at the top of the Boxnation-aired Steve Wood show at the Bolton Whites Hotel. Here he will face Marin Fidel Rios for the ranking-enhancing WBO Inter-Continental title.
In nearby Manchester, super bantamweight Michael Gomez Jr [5(1)-0] features in a six round bout on a card at the Bowlers Exhibition Centre.
Former Irish champion Frankie Gavin [23(14)-2(1)] tops the big bill at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham. Funtime Frankie takes on Sam Eggington in a local derby which doubles as a crossroads clash for the 31 year old former British and Commonwealth champ. On the undercard in Birmingham, Tideswell-Drogheda middleweight Tommy Carter [1(0)-3(1)] is in as an opponent for Ryan Kelly and will be looking to cause a shock on the Sky Sports-aired bill.
