Watch: Paul Upton becomes Irish champion with stoppage win
Pauly Upton became the ninth fighter to claim the Irish light middleweight title with victory over two time challenger Terry Maughan on Saturday night.
Belfast raised Upton, who has substantial Dublin support, emulated the likes of Jim Rock, Neil Sinclair, Peter McDonagh, Lee Murtagh, Ciaran Healy and Jim Webb by claiming the strap.
The Ricky Hatton trained star stopped Maughan in the sixth round of their contest.
With both fighters hugely proud of their heritage, there was much emotion when the result was read out, and the vociferous Upton support went into raptures when their man was presented with boxing’s second most famous green belt.
The inside-the-distance victory sees Upton stretch his unbeaten record to [12(2)-0], while the game Maughan drops to [10(0)-6(6)-1].
