Warren wins Saunders v Sorro purse bids – could Lee v Quillin be back on?

IT seems the door has re opened for Andy Lee to travel to America and put his WBO middleweight title on the line against Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Qullin in April.

Rumours of Lee versus the former WBO Champion live on an NBC broadcast show broke last month,  just weeks after there was talk of a Dublin defence against Patrick Nelson.

However, Frank Warren, promoter of Lee’s mandatory challenger Billy Joe Saunders, looked set to put a spanner in the works and called on the WBO to make Lee Saunders for late Spring.

Warren seemed content to let Lee take a voluntary defence in Ireland, but wasn’t keen on the Lou DiBella promoted Limerick man having a high profile fight Stateside.

Late last month the WBO called for purse bids and Saunder’s looked likely to be Lee’s first defence. However news broke today that Queensberry Promotions won purse bids to promote a Saunders versus Micheal Soro European title fight, suggesting the French middleweight is next for the Londoner.

Which, in turn leaves Lee free to make a voluntary defence and the fighter, who beat Matt Korbov in Las Vegas to claim the WBO middleweight title vacated by ‘Kid Chocolate’, could take up a substantial offer to the former champion.

Team Lee have yet to comment on what is rumour and speculation, but it is believed the Irish hero would welcome a high profile fight Stateside before returning home to defend in Thomond Park against Saunders in the Summer.
