Walsh and Taylor win on Day 1 of European Championships

“A good day at the office.”
That’s how Irish team manager Fiona Hennigan described today’s wins for Michaela Walsh and Katie Taylor at the 9th European Women’s Championships in Bucharest, Romania.
Walsh, who celebrates her 21st birthday tomorrow, beat Helina Bruyevigh (Belarus) on a unanimous decision and will now face Ukrainian bantam Ivanna Krupena, a bronze medallist at the 2011 European Championships in the Netherlands, in the last 16 on Tuesday.
Taylor, who is aiming for her 6th European crown in-a-row, comfortably beat Sandra Brugger of Switzerland on a unanimous decision in a repeat of the 2007 European final in Denmark, which Taylor also won.
The Olympic champion will now meet Romania’s Mera Lavina in the last-eight on Wednesday, one win away from claiming at least bronze.
“Michael boxed very well against a good opponent and Katie had a great win, said Fiona Hennigan.
“It’s fantastic to get two wins from two and it’s a great boost to the squad to get off to a winning start. It was a good day at the office.”
Claire Grace will be the only Irish boxer in action tomorrow. The Callan BC welter is in against Turkey’s Kara Guluzar for a place in the semi-finals and at least a bronze medal.
