VIDEO: Conlan speaks about winning World Championships Medal

Michael Conlan assured Ireland of a first medal in Doha. The current European Elite bantamweight champion and London 2012 bronze medallist beat Azerbaijan’s Tayfur Aliyev.

The win bagged Ireland’s 10th AIBA World medal – Micheal O’Reilly made it 11 and Joe Ward 12 – since the great Tommy Corr (Clonoe BC) claimed our first medal at this level at Munich 1982.

Irish fans in Doha serenaded Conlan over the line to a convincing unanimous decision with a rousing version of the Fields of Athenry.

Conlan, Katie Taylor and John Joe Nevin have now won medals at all the majors – Olympics, World and European Championships.

“To tell you the truth Michael (Conlan) never had to move out of second gear. He dominated all three rounds,” said Billy Walsh after the fight and Conlan suggested as much when speaking to the press.
