Upton follows in the footsteps of some great domestic fighters

Pauly Upton followed in the footsteps of some well know Irish fighters when he buckled the green strap around his waist with victory over Terry Maughan on Saturday.

The Ricky Hatton trained older brother of Irish title hopefuls Sonny and Anto Upton, became the ninth Irish titlist at the weight.

His immediate predecessor at the weight was Dee Walsh, who retired recently, before Walsh Peter McDonagh won the second of his three Irish straps.

Lee Murtagh claimed the belt on an emotional night back in 2012 before using his status as champion of Ireland to get a Stadium fight in America.

Former British champ and European challenger Neil Sinclair is another who held the title. Jamie Moore, Ciaran Healy and four weight Irish champ Jim Rock are also on the list.
