Tyrone McCullagh to fight Area champion in Belfast headliner
Tyrone McCullagh [7(4)-0] has had a frustrating few days leading up to his first headline fight this Saturday.
The Derry super bantam tops the Ginley Promotions ‘Danger at The Devenish’ bill in Belfast tomorrow night.
It was initially announced on Wednesday that McCullagh would face game Colombian Jefferson Vargas [5(0)-6(0)] over eight rounds, but visa issues would scupper this fight on Thursday.
A fight was close to being made with an undefeated German prospect yesterday, with flights being booked and terms seemingly agreed – but the proposed foe pulled out at the eleventh hou.
This all led to a mad dash to find a last-minute opponent, and some shifting around has saved the day.
McCullagh will now face BBBoC Central Area super flyweight champion Craig Derbyshire [5(1)-20(3)-3′.
The English fighter was due to be boxing on an MTK Scotland card in Glasgow against Ross Murray tonight, but has been switched across to Belfast.
The Doncaster 26 year old is an exceedingly game foe, only having been stopped thrice and outpointed unanimously just twice. Last time out he upset undefeated prospect Anthony Smith, dropping him twice in the final round to claim the BBBoC Central Area 115lbs title by one point on the cards.
Over the years he has shocked a number of prospects, and has been harshly edged out countless other times
The card tomorrow on the Finaghy Road also features Davey Oliver Joyce, Gary Cully, Sean Turner, Anto Upton, Stevie Collins, and Steven Ward.
