Trainor ready to roll

11 February 2011 – Jonny Stapleton

Declan Trainor is back in Ireland and ready to bring some volcanic heat to a relatively dormant Irish cruiser weight division.

The former Irish U19 champions debut demolition of highly touted Oz boxing wizard Jamie Bogovic seems to have scared off any would be Australian challengers and Trainor has returned home in a bid to get active.

The county Down native, who both literally and figuratively put former Australian amateur stand out, Bogovics nose out of joint last summer, is planning a domestic assault in 2011 before progressing to the next level.

Indeed, the one fight novice has offered to step into any potential breach left by the withdrawal of Michael Sweeney from his Irish Cruiserweight title fight with Ian Tims on March 19.

Said title fight would prove unlikely as the young as Northern banger would somehow have to get an eight rounder under his belt between now and then, but his willingness to step up to the title plate is a refreshing signal of domestic intent.

I am back in Ireland to box. The plan for now is to be the best in Ireland at my weight then step by step work up to fighting for a few titles in the next few years, prospect Trainor told ww.irish-boxing.com.

Oz was brilliant. I really enjoyed it, but it was getting to the point were no one would box me over there so had to come home to continue my boxing career. I think I could shake up the cruiserweight scene, but there are also a lot of very good cruisers about. I think that all the other cruisers are great at what they do, but I think it is time for the younger generation to come forward, the fighter who only has one four round fight under his belt added before declaring himself available for a title tilt.

I would definitely step into challenge for the Irish title on March 19 if someone pulled out. Basically I would fight anyone because if you want to be best you got to beat the best.

Meanwhile Ian Tims claims rumours that his mouth watering fight with Sweeney has been cancelled once again have yet to reach him.

The Pascal Collins trained fighter, who also has his sights set on cleaning up the domestic scene this year, stressed he is still preparing for the bout and has no intentions of pulling out.

Any cancellation has not come from this end. I am ready to fight Michael Sweeney. Declan is a good young fighter but he would needs to get an eight rounder in before he can fight me. If Michael cant take the fight I would be happy to fight Darren Corbett and send him back to the retirement home.
