Thompson: It’s great to be back now I want the Irish title
WILLIE Thompson has set his sights on the Irish light middleweight title.
The Belfast 34 year old returned to the ring for the first time since 2012 and his failed attempt to dethrone then Irish champion Lee Murtagh in the Ulster Hall on Friday night with a points win over Liam Griffiths.
Thompson won an entertaining fight 40-36 and instantly set his sights on claiming the Irish strap
“I fought for the Irish title a while back and I was robbed. I thought I won it that night but now I am back and I want that Irish title. I will leave it up to my team but that is what I want,” he said.
“I was pleased with the result tonight but I was rusty after being out of the ring for so long. I found it difficult to find my range – but I will improve and get better. I want that Irish title and it is great to be back.”
