‘The Legend Shall Return’ – Eddie Hearn Confirms Katie Taylor Fight Date
Katie Taylor [21(6)-0] will return to the ring for the first time since her historic fight with Amanda Serrano late next month.
Reports previously suggested the Irish sporting sensation would next trade leather at Wembley Arena on October 29 – and Eddie Hearn has confirmed that is the case.
The undisputed lightweight world champion will defend her titles against a yet-to-be-confirmed opponent on a DAZN broadcast card.
Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn previously revealed he would stage a show in Britain on October 29 as a precursor to John Ryder’s fight with former Dennis Hogan and Spike O’Sullivan foe Jaime Munguia.
And this week he confirmed Taylor will top a bill that may also include fights for Shannon Courtney and heavyweight Johnny Fisher.
“We’re going to make an announcement Friday I think…but October 29th Katie Taylor will make her return,” Hearn told Ariel Helwani’s MMA Hour on Wednesday. “Watch this space. She has a number of mandatories to take care of. The legend shall return October 29th in London. At Wembley Arena. She’ll be headlining back where she debuted at Wembley Arena.”
Taylor had hoped to go straight into a rematch with Serrano, who she defeated in Madison Square Garden in April, and there were attempts to get the return made for Croke Park.
However, a homecoming has been shelved until next year and the Olympic gold medal winner fights in London next.
MMA names Cris Cyborg and Holly Holm have been mentioned as possible opponents, but Cyborg makes her boxing debut in three weeks’ time ruling her out, while ‘Preacher Daughter’ chatter has lessened.
Jessica McCaskill and Chantelle Cameron, two names also linked to the groundbreaking star are otherwise engaged, fighting each other in November ruling them out, while Serrano fights on the same card as Anthony Cacace next week.
WBA super featherweight world champion Hyun Mi Choi has also been name-dropped recently but there remains no strong indication as to who the opponent may be.
Both Caoimhin Agyarko and Gary Cully, the Irish fighters signed to Matchroom will be hoping to appear on any Taylor bill. In fact, it’s been suggested Belfast light middleweight Agyarko is a cert for the card.
