The Future is Bright-Young Irish stars claim 8 major medals over the weekend

Ireland’s talented young male and female boxers once again left their calling cards at World and European competition this weekend.

The Irish squads claimed eight medals – one gold, two silver and five bronze –  at the AIBA World Youth and Junior Women’s Championships in Taiwan and the European Junior Men’s Championships in the Ukraine.

Niamh Earley, Jason Harty, Natasha Logan, Jim O’Reilly, Lorcan Hurley, Kelsey Leonard, Anthony Johnston and Joanne Richards finished in podiums positions.

Moreover, Hurley scooped the Best Technical Boxer Award and AIBA 3 Star Referee & Judge (R&J) Philip Rooney picked up the Best R&J Award at the European Juniors.

Ireland’s Youth squad finished in 12th spot in the medals table and in 15th place in the rankings table in Taiwan, while the Junior panel finished in 9th and 8th place in the medals and rankings table.

The European Junior team finished in a top five position in the rankings and medals table in the Ukraine.

The Irish squad are due home from the Ukraine at 1:30pm today via Dublin Airport (Terminal 2). Team Ireland are due home from Taiwan via Dublin Airport at 1:35pm tomorrow (Terminal 2).
