Taylor draws former final foe in first round of European title defence
Katie Taylor will open her European title defence against Sandra Brugger in Bucharest, Romania tomorrow.
The Olympic champion, who is aiming for her 6th successive title in the Romanian capital, will face the Swiss lightweight in a repeat of the 2007 final which Taylor won in Denmark.
Michaela Walsh opens Ireland’s campaign versus Helina Bruyevigh of Belarus on Sunday.
The 31-nation tournament – which is not using seeding – begins this afternoon in Bucharest. None of the five-strong Irish squad are in action today.
Russia’s Sofya Ochigava, who Taylor beat in the 2011 and 2012 European, World and Olympic finals, meets Maria Jassen of the Netherlands today.
