Sweeney and Fryers in European action today
Two Irish fighters fight for European quarter-final places in Montenegro this afternoon.
St Anne’s Shannon Sweeney and Immaculata’s Caitlin Fryers are in last 16 action in Budva.
48kg Shannon Sweeney boxes for the first time in the competition in Monday’s afternoon session. The Mayo talent meets Gayane Ter-Bargseghyan Armenia in bout two. Light flyweight Caitlin Fryers, contests her European Elite debut against England’s Savannah Alifia Stubley in the evening session’s opening bout.
Sweeney and Fryers are the only Irish boxers through the ropes today – but they are not the only Irish fighters to have been presented with last 16 action.
Amy Broadhurst, Carly McNaul, Aoife O’Rourke, Michaela Walsh, Kellie Harrington and Christina Desmond all progressed through the last 16 stage and fight for medals over Tuesday and Wednesday, as does Kaci Rock who received a bye to the last eight.
