Spike O’Sullivan reveals Vegas fight date as Canelo chase heats up

*The following interview was conducted prior to the Golden Boy Promotions press release on March 5th which revealed that Canelo Alvarez had tested positive for trace amounts of clenbuterol.

Forget known middleweight names such as Danny Jacobs, David Lemieux, and Gabriel Rosado, Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan [27(19)-2(1)] only wants to talk about pound-for-pound star Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

The Cork 160 pound fighter looked a cert for the massive Gennady Golovkin versus Alvarez rematch undercard and it had been suggested he would fight former IBF champion and renowned power puncher David Lemieux on the massive May 5th show in Las Vegas.

High-profile World title challenger Rasado had thrown his name into the mix and went as far as to call out a fighter he had, until O’Sullivan’s win over Antoine Douglas, “never heard of.”

However, ‘Spike’ only has eyes for one man and that is the red-haired Mexican – and has revealed that he will in fact fight in Vegas the night before the big clash at the T-Mobile Arena.

“All I care about is Canelo that’s the one I want. I don’t care about Lemieux and certainly not Rosado,” Spike told Irish-Boxing.com before detailing his changed May plans.

“I am fighting on the main event live on ESPN in Las Vegas on May 4th. Then watch I am going to fight Canelo they will have to make it happen after that. My opponent will be announced soon, but for me it’s a stepping stone to Canelo and if he beats Golovkin the night after all those belts. Let’s do it around September.”

Alvarez’s failed test has been put down to contaminated beef and his fight with Golovkin looks set to still take place. Win or lose, he will most likely return to the ring in September around Mexican Independence Day [September 16th].

For O’Sullivan, his May opponent is yet to be announced. Lemieux will continue to be mentioned and Rosado will no doubt offer his services again.

The 33-year-old Cork fighter claims he is more than willing to knock out Canadian Lemieux en-route to fulfilling his Canelo goal, but is adamant Rosado has already had ample opportunity to fight him.

“Rosado was twice given the chance to fight me and he said no, now he says he doesn’t know who I am and wants to fight me?”

“Now I hold the trump card. He wasn’t willing to give me the chance when I needed it. I don’t need him now so he can fuck off. Look he has a shit record and has been beaten by Martin Murray and Lemieux, two guys I would beat, so its not a good fight for me.”

“He is coming cap in hand now but he wasn’t willing before. He insulted me before so why should I give him the opportunity?”

“If it’s Lemieux, I get a stoppage win and then I’ll go toe to toe with Canelo. That is the fight I want and it is a fight I believe I can get. We are both with Golden Boy so it is easy to make so whatever happens with the Golovkin fight I am going to fight Canelo.”
