Sitting Pretty: Geraghty strolls through first eight rounder
Declan Geraghty moved into title eligibility tonight in style.
The super featherweight boxed over eight rounds for the first time in his career against Tellez Johnson (9-25-5).
The bout at the Bellhouston Leisure Centre was shown live on Boxnation, and Pretty Boy certainly did his best to put on a show for the camera’s against an ultra safe and defensive foe.
The late replacement from Nicaragua showed some ambition in the first round, but was countered by the Dub and from that point on the journey man covered up and went into Bear Grylls survival mode.
As a result the stoppage never looked on the cards. The 25 year old former amateur standout, who once again showed his hit and not get hit prowess, did show flashes of quality, but after a routine, one sided and relatively unexciting eight rounds, Geraghty will be more than keen to progress to the next level.
Geraghty will be happy he did the eight rounds comfortable and was busy down the stretch as he moves into title contention.
Post the extremely comfortable 80-72 win the Boxnation pundits talked a possible rematch with new MGM stable mate Jono Carroll, but an exciting Irish title fight with Ciaran McVarnock looks more likely.
The win sees Geraghty move to 13(3)-1(0) and the Dubliner will now have his sights set in an Irish title fight, with the Boxing Union of Ireland approving a bout between him and Ciaran McVarnock earlier in the week.
