Shane McGuigan signals that he will no longer train Carl Frampton
Carl Frampton [23(14)-1(0)] confirmed his departure from Cyclone Promotions this afternoon, and Shane McGuigan has seemingly confirmed that his partnership with ‘The Jackal’ has also ended.
A short statement from Frampton left out specifics, and his training situation remained unclear. While the Belfast featherweight said that “I would like to thank Barry, the Mc Guigan family and Cyclone promotions for our time together,” and this seemed to suggest an end to his relationship with the London-based trainer, there was still some uncertainty.
However 28 year old McGuigan would later remove Frampton from the list of fighters he trains in his Twitter bio, seemingly signalling that the pair have also parted company.
While this move will come as little surprise to most, some had held out hope that the Frampton-McGuigan partnership would endure in this area, especially considering the obvious close bond between the pair.
McGuigan had been involved in the the training of Frampton since early in the Tiger’s Bay man’s career, however took over entirely on the eve of Frampton’s European title win over Kiko Martinez. He would go on to break numerous records, becoming the youngest lead head trainer of a world title winner, unified champion, two-weight world champion, and multiple world champions.
Coalisland middleweight Conrad Cummings, Portsmouth’s Josh Pritchard, northampton’s Chantelle Cameron, Commonwealth light welterweight champ Josh Taylor, and WBA super middleweight champion George Groves remain listed on the trainer’s profile.
30 year old Frampton will now be on the hunt for a new trainer, with Adam Booth, Dave Coldwell, and Ismael Salas all doing the rounds on the Twitter rumour mill today.
