Sensational Amy Broadhurst secures silver at European U22 Championships
Just over 24 hours on from guaranteeing bronze, Amy Broadhurst upgraded to an assured silver medal at the European U22 Championships in Romania this evening.
The Dealgan lightweight gave a hugely impressive performance in Targu Jiu, outclassing French fighter Belinda Limuka.
Having defeated top Turk Esra Yilmiz in a close fight yesterday afternoon, the Louth fighter was on top form today.
21-year-old Broadhurst was able to sit in the pocket in and dominate the exchanges with the former European Junior gold medalist, being unable to miss with her overhand left, and taking a clear unanimous decision win.
Broadhurst will now fight for her third European gold medal following triumphs at Youth and Junior level – along with a European Youth silver and an EU Youth gold.
Ireland’s most decorated underage boxer ever will face Italian Francesca Martusciello in the decider this Sunday.
Broadhurst beat the same foe in the final of the 2015 European Youths on a 2-0-1 decision over. In addition to this silver, Martusciello won a bronze at the same tournament a year previously.
Earlier today, Galway’s Gabriel Dossen bowed out at the middleweight quarter-final stage on a tight split-decision, while Roscommon middleweight Aoife O’Rourke is in action later today looking to join Broadhurst in the finals.
