Sean Turner suffers shock loss in Solihull
Sean ‘Big Sexy’ Turner [10(7)-1(0)] suffered the first defeat of his professional career in Solihull tonight.
The Dublin heavyweight was fighting on the MTK Birmingham ‘Exchange at the Grange’ card at the Tudor Grange Leisure Centre just outside Birmingham and fell to an eight-round points loss to Plymouth-based Pole Kamil Sokolowski [4(1)-9(2)-2].
Turner, in what was his first fight with new trainer Pete Taylor, was denied on the referee’s card, with a score of 77:75 in favour of Sokolowski.
The busy Eastern European would bank some early rounds and withstand a late charge from Turner, who went past six rounds for the first time in his career, to seal the win.
It’s a second successive shock win for Sokolowsi, who stopped AJ Carter earlier in the month. A tough fight which provided a chance of comparison with Con Sheehan, who outpointed the same opponent 79:74 in November, Turner took the defeat with good grace and stated his intention to learn from the experience.
The result leaves question marks around Turner’s sanctioned Irish title fight with Sheehan, which was intended to be next on the agenda for both. The pair looked set to meet this Summer, perhaps on the June 17th Belfast BoxNation show, however Big Sexy may want a rematch with Sokolowski first.
