Rogan shakes off rust

8 November 2010 – Jonny Stapleton

Martin Rogan made a successful return to the ring in Limerick on Saturday and urged everyone to get behind him as he plans to become the first ever Irish born heavyweight champion of the world.

The newly named Iron Man stopped Yavor Marinchev in just 2:44 of round one of his comeback fight with a hook to the body before throwing a verbal blow the way of some doubters and negative media.

The big heavyweight, who came back from a career threatening injury exactly a year after his last fight, was unhappy with some comments made in the press and called for people to back him as he plots a path to the most prestigious belt in boxing.

It is great to get back in and its great to get a fight in Limerick. I did finish it early, but I have to respect the man for coming over. Anyone that gets in to face me is a real man, the charismatic Rogan said.

He is not a Matt Skelton or Audley Harrison but I am only back from a year out and I need to get some rust off. It seems I should have came back and fought a world champion tonight? I have been out for a year and this nonsense that was in some of the papers doesnt help the sport. We should be pushing and supporting all our sportsmen not having a go. Lets leave the past in the past and look forward. Unfortunately there are some papers that want to dwell on things instead of pushing the sport forward. They keep saying I was defeated and slumped in my seat. I never walked out defeated what I did do was save myself from being paralysed for the sake of my family, the former Commonwealth champion added before following his own advice and glancing forward.

I am in Brian Peters hands now, he is very educated and we are going to step up together. I am going to Castlebar in two weeks and Irelands Iron Man will defeat another villain.
