Richards guaranteed bronze after win in Worlds this morning
Joanne Richard’s guaranteed Ireland at least one bronze medal at the AIBA World Youth and Junior Championships in Taipei, Taiwan today.
The St Michael’s (New Ross) BC ace comprehensively beat Indian light-welter Shruti Yadav on a unanimous decision, with one judge scoring all three rounds 10-8 to the Irish champion.
Yadav, who was being tipped to win gold, started each round aggressively, but a focused and determined-looking Richards held her composure and stood her ground to pick off clean and solid shots to ensure that her country won’t be returning empty handed from Asia.
She’ll now meet Kylie Hall of the USA in the Junior 66kg semi-final.
Orla Garvey was also in action today, but despite a typically brave performance the Irish feather was beaten by Zhane Crocket of the USA.
Natasha Logan and Ciara Ginty will be between the ropes this afternoon. Logan will be in the ring at exactly 12pm, followed by Ginty at approximately 1:45pm)
Irish times apply above. Taiwan is seven hours ahead of Ireland.
