RESULTS: The Liffey Crane Hire Irish Boxer of the Month – JUNE
It’s time for the results of the Liffey Crane Hire Irish Boxer of the Month award.
One of the biggest months yet featuring big success in both the amateurs and pros, it was perhaps the highest-quality shortlist ever seen for this award and the voting was extremely close.
Without further ado, the winner of the vote is…
Kurt Walker
The Lisburn bantam/feather cemented his spot as Ireland’s top male amateur with a glorious gold at the European Games in Minsk.
Upon reaching the medal rounds, Walker defeated the #1 and #2 seeds to top the podium and claim his second gold in as many major international tournaments.
Another win over Peter McGrail followed by a clear win in the final versus Myokola Butsenko certainly add weight behind tips of Olympic potential for a fighter who has come on massively over the past couple of years.
Coming in second was Mulhuddart underage star Chloe Gabriel who won a wonderful gold at the European Juniors while Regan Buckley finished third following his stunning bronze at the European Games.
Of course, last week was not a regular week in Irish boxing following the tragic death of Kevin Sheehy which has shaken the community to its core.
Sheehy wasn’t nominated for these small awards last Tuesday but it would be wrong not to recognise the Limerick heavyweight who had a massive future ahead of him
So, for the first time, this month’s award will be shared, with Sheehy being given an honorary recognition.
