Peter McDonagh’s straight-talking analysis of Golovkin v Brook

Peter McDonagh is an immensely popular in boxing circles.

The journeyman turned Cinderella man is a three-weight Irish champion and a respected pundit.

Known for his straight-talking, the Connemara Kid’s views hold a lot of weight.

With Matchroom’s Kell Brook stepping up two weights to face Kazakh destroyer Gennady Golovkin in one of the biggest fights of the year there has inevitably been a lot of talk, much of which is bigging up the Sheffield boxer’s chances.

However, MGM’s McDonagh is not one for ifs, buts, or sitting on the fence, and the Galway man gave his thoughts on the Sky Box Office clash to IFL TV.

While he obviously respects Brooks bravery, McDonagh explained that “I know Kell well, and I’d like to see Kell do it, but I think one hundred per-cent that Golovkin will knock Kell Brook out, no two ways about it.”

“There’s elite fighters, and then there’s superstars, and Golovkin is a superstar.”

“What I can see in this fight is Brook starting sharp, coming out very sharp, being quite strong in the first few rounds.”

“But the ring presence of Golovkin alone, without even throwing punches, will drain Kell Brook.”

“Once he gets drained and as soon as he gets banged with a couple of bodyshots, it’ll slow him down to a heavyweight’s pace.”

“I only see the fight going one way.”
