Ormond set to sign with ‘most powerful man in boxing’
Doors could be blown open for Stephen Ormond as he is on the verge of signing with of signing with ‘the most powerful man in boxing,’ Al Haymon.
Ormond travels to America early next week and fights in Micky Ward’s home town of Lowell, Massachusetts on a Premier Boxing Champions-broadcast Murphy’s Boxing-promoted show.
irish-boxing.com learnt today that Ormond will remain Stateside after the clash, spar in LA, and fight Stateside again on October 30.
Ormond also revealed he is on the verge of penning a deal with Haymon and becoming a PBC fighter.
‘The Rock,’ who felt he never got a real chance to fulfill his potential under previous promoter Frank Warren, has a contract offer and could pen a deal after his October 3 bout.
The move, if it comes off, could open a number of doors for the 18-2 former WBO European Champion. Haymon is fast becoming one of boxing’s most influential operators, as he now works with the likes of Floyd Mayweather, Amir Khan, Julio César Chávez, Jr., Danny Garcia, Adonis Stevenson, Adrien Broner and more recently has become an adviser to Ireland’s IBF World champion Carl Frampton.
Since upgrading from manager to Premier Boxing Champions promoter, Haymon has secured terrestrial TV and has shown no hesitation in pitting his big name fighters against each other.
Meaning he won’t hesitate to pair the Dubliner with his big name lightweights on big terrestrial TV cards.
Additionally, considering they have the same trainer in Paschal Collins, both work under the Murphy’s boxing banner, and both fight in America on a PBC show next week, it’s safe to predict that if Ormond pens a deal with Haymon so too will Cork middleweight Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan.
