Belfast flyweight Joe Fitzpatrick produced a fine performance to book his ticket into the quarter-finals of the Open Youth Competition at the National Stadium in Dublin tonight.
The Immaculata BC dynamo, a bronze medal winner for Ireland at the 2011 European Youth Championships in Dublin, posted a 19-10 win over Hugh Joyce of the St Michael’s Athy club.
Kilkenny’s Keith Flavin got tonight’s preliminaries underway with an inside the distance triumph over Cork’s Mickey Oldham, followed by wins for the impressive quartet of Eamon McNally, Gary McKenna, Kieran Kenny and Kurt Walker. Lisburn flyweight Walker found himself two points in arrears after a sluggish start against Limerick’s Joe Sweeney but turned things around in the second and third to hammer out a convincing 15-3 win. Rory Lavery and Ryan Peake had to be separated on a countback following a 10-10 tie, St John Bosco BC prospect Lavery progressing on accepted scores from the only lightweight contest of the session.
There wasn’t much daylight between Daniel Fullerton or Steven Webb either, Fullerton edging a tight bantamweight duel by a single point. Ian Byrne, Charlie Beresford, James O’Reilly progressed on a night when all the 56Kg victors were operating out of the blue corner.
Cork’s David Roche and Darragh Roche, with a narrow win over Patrick Cawley, also advanced along with Patrick Mongan and Dylan Moran, while Stephen Mulholland had his hand raised in victory following a dramatic first round KO. Meantime, the Toome ABC didn’t have to “waite” in vain for their first win of the tournament, Thomas Waites recording a 10-4 decision over Leroy Dick to bring the curtain down on tonight’s proceedings.
The Open Youth Competition continues at the National Stadium tomorrow with two sessions beginning at 1pm and 6pm.
