By IABA Press Officer Bernard O’Neill
There was Huge Excitement across 5 Dublin Schools yesterday as double Olympic Gold Medallists, Michael Carruth and Katie Taylor along with the IABA Startbox and DCC Community Development Team did a whistle stop tour to Warrenmount Donore Avenue, St Francis Priorswood & Our lady Immaculate Darndale,St Josephs Fairview, Marian College Irishtown, as well as NDNSP in Ballymun who were crowned winners of the Michael Carruth Perpetual Trophy.
The Start Box Initiative is a partnership between the IABA and Dublin City Council and represents an ideal way to first engage with amateur boxing through the communities of Dublin.
Over 4000 young people engage in StartBox each year. Underpinning community structures and providing a new platform for people to engage with Ireland’s most successful Olympic sport, the Startbox goal is to promote boxing and community activity and to encourage participation in sport.
The cup was awarded to the students of NDNSP who participated in the innovative StartBox Programme. The decision to award NDNSP was based on participation levels both in and out of the boxing ring. It is recognition of not only the thirteen weeks training from the boxers, but also of the supporters who make the final phase of StartBox – The Showcase Exhibitions in the National Stadium.
