The National Elite Championships begin this month in Dublin, and with places on the plane to Olympic qualifiers up for grabs, it promises to be one of the most exciting championships in recent memory.
With the closing date for entries tomorrow at 5pm, the IABA have released a list of all the boxers who have registered so far.
Boxing begins on November 13th for the women, and November 20th for the men, with the finals on December 11th
Ceire Smith is moving up from light flyweight to take on Michaela Walsh at 51kg, one of the three weight classes for female boxers in Rio. Katie Taylor at 60kg will have to repel the challenge of Kayeligh McCormack, and at 75kg it’s a shoot-out between Christina Desmond and Laoise Traynor.
For the men, as rumoured, light-fly champ Brendan Irvine moves up to 52kg to attempt to qualify for Rio where he will face the stiff challenge of Myles Casey and World Junior Champ Willie Donoghue.
At 60kg Sean McComb, who has not yet confirmed his entry, will do battle in a packed division that features David Oliver Joyce and underage stars Gary McKenna and Gary Cully.
Another hot division is 64kg where current champ Dean Walsh will defend his title and spot on the plane to the qualifiers against former European champ Ray Moylette and Wayne Kelly who moves down from welterweight.
69kg is currently populated by just Fergal Redmond although it is expected that Adam Nolan and Caoimhin Hynes will soon confirm their entry.
Middleweight Michael O’Reilly, who was unfairly denied a place in the Olympics last month, also has yet to register, and will have Commonwealth bronze medalist Connor Coyle and underage star John Joyce.
At 91kg, Darren O’Neill will again look to keep his heavyweight crown away from Ken Okungbowa.
While at super heavy, current champ Dean Gardiner is yet to register, leaving Thomas Carty and Damien Sullivan as the only current entries.
