Murphy to debut in Oz

18 April 2011 – Cormac Campbell

Former Sacred Heart, Newry amateur star Patrick Murphy signed off from the amateur code in style with a points victory over 2008 World Junior Championship bronze medallist Timacoy Williams in Brisbane last week.

The bout was the main event on a special Irish v Australian card that had been put back from March but the former Ulster Senior Champion made little of the postponement to take a majority decision, tying the match in the process.

Murphy was congratulated afterwards by former WBC World light-middleweight Champion John The Beast Mugabi, who was in attendance. After the fight Mugabi told Patrick, that with a jab like his, he would tip him to be a professional boxer to look out for in the future.

Mugabi wont have to wait long as Murphy will make his pro debut on May 13 at Fortitude Valley, Queensland in the welterweight division. Facing Murphy will by 0-5 trialhorse David Bainbridge.
