More amateur action to watch out for this weekend

A seven-strong Irish team will fight tomorrow evening at the Leszka Drogosz Memorial in Southern Poland.

The team are a Portlaoise BC select, and will face opponents from Poland and Ukraine tomorrow in Kielce.

Former underage star Michael Nevin, a triple European gold medalist who won World Youth bronze last month, features, as does recent Senior (Intermediate) champion Tommy Casey and super heavyweight Senior (Elite) runner-up Thomas Carty.

Also featuring are Jason Scully, Owen Bergin, Jimmy O’Reilly, and Tony Browne.

The squad are also taking part in a training camp in Poland and return home Monday.

Kielce-born Drogosz was an eight-time Polish champion, a three-time European Elite champion, and claimed Olympic bronze at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome.

There are Irish boxers in action all over he continent this weekend, with Stevie McKenna, Sean McComb, and John Joyce in Bundesliga bouts, and a nine-strong Munster select taking part in the Odivelas Box Cup.
