Mongan grabs some Rio Revenge as Ireland beat Russia in Dublin Round Robin

An Ireland team (featuring one Italian) claimed a slender 6:5 victory over Russia tonight at the National Stadium to end the opening day of the Dublin International Round Robin.

The result of the night came at lightweight where, in what was his international debut, Galway’s Pat Mongan edged a split decision over Olympic bronze medalist Vladimir Nikitin. The Russian, of course, was the boxer adjudged to have beaten Mick Conlan at the Rio Olympics. The Olympic BC boxer battled back from a count in the first following a wicked bodyshot and finished extremely strong against the experienced Komi fighter.

There were also wins for Brendan Irvine, Sean McComb, Martin Keenan and Kurt Walker, while Manuel Cappai also had his hand raised.

Earlier in the evening Ormeau Road flyweight Carly McNaul claimed a split decision win over Italian Roberta Mostarda in the Germany v Italy match – won 9-2 by the Italians.

Kurt Walker defeated European Games gold medalist Bakhtovar Nazirov (4:1), avenging his opening round defeat in Baku two years ago.

In an immensely close fight, Kilkenny heavyweight Darren O’Neill was edged on a 3-2 split by Olympic champion Evgeny Tischenko.

Rathkeale super heavy Martin Keenan scored the decisive win in the final bout, defeating Ivan Veriasov – who received a public warning for holding in the second in the round.

Newly appointed High Performance Director Bernard Dunne was at ringside for the opening Day of the tournament. The Dubliner begins his tenure on Monday May 8th.

Boxing resumes at 11am tomorrow.
