Mick Conlan – I’m the Conor McGregor of Irish boxing!

Some in the Irish boxing community seek to distance themselves from mixed martial arts and the exploits of Conor McGregor – new bantamweight World Champion Mick Conlan, on the other hand, has no problems comparing himself to ‘The Notorious.’

Yesterday the Belfast man defeated rugged Uzbek youngster Murodjon Akhmadaliev to take top prize and make history by winning Ireland’s first ever gold medal at boxing’s toughest tournament – something which he had predicted beforehand.

After the bout, Conlan noted the success of his recent predictions and jokingly compared himself to Ireland’s most visible sports star.

The charismatic Conlan told Irish boxing journalist Ciaran Gallagher that “you can call me ‘the Conor McGregor of boxing’ — I predict everything I do and I’m coming through successful!”

“Call me Mystic Mick! I’m coming through with everything I’m saying, I’m not just making false promises.”

“I promised I was going to be world champion, I promised I was going to qualify for the Olympics through the WSB, I promised I’d be European and Commonwealth champion and I’ve done everything I said I’d do.”
