Michaela Walsh becomes Team Northern Ireland’s first female boxing medal winner

MICHAELA Walsh became the first ever Team Northern Ireland female Commonwealth medal winner thanks to victory in Glasgow today.

The 21 year old Belfast fighter beat Jamaican Sarah Joy Rae via an unanimous points decision to progress to the final flyweight four.

Walsh, who made history on Monday by being involved in the first women’s boxing contest at a Commonwealth Games, was in control from the start of her quarter-final contest and eased to victory in the four rounds.

Walsh joins, Michael Conlan, Joe Fitzpatrick, Sean Duffy and Sean McGlinchy are also in the semi-finals.

Alanna Audley-Murphy, Paddy Barnes, Connor Coyle and Steven Donnelly all fight later on today.
