Matchroom prospect and Phil Sutcliffe Jr rival signs up with MGM

Fast becoming one of the largest outfits in European boxing, Macklin’s Gym Marbella have announced another new signing. The Irish-owned, Marbella-based outfit have linked up with former English light welterweight champion and WBA Continental beltholder Tommy ‘Da Gun’ Martin [13(5)-0].

21 year old Martin is promoted by Matchroom, and the Sky Sports starlet will be managed by MGM going forward. In Martin’s most recent fight, he outgunned Michael Devine, whom Jono Carroll defeated in the final of Prizefighter, scoring a tenth round stoppage.

In recent months there has been a bit of a clamour to match Martin with top Dublin prospect Phil Sutcliffe Jr. [8(6)-0]. This talk stems from their common opponent, Liverpool’s Terry Needham. Sutcliffe faced Needham in February, bulldozing the Englishman within a round. When Martin faced the same opponent four months later he would suffer a flash first round knockdown before controlling the bout en-route to a 7th round stoppage.

With MGM now on board, could the pair meet in the ring in the near future?
