McMahon wins Women of Boxing’s Boxer of the Month award
CERTAINLY not as prestigious as the WBC Interim bantamweight World title Christina McMahon claimed last month, but Ireland’s leading pro lady picked up another award this week.
The Monaghan puncher was voted the Women of Boxing’s Boxer of the Month for May.
McMahon topped ‘an amazing list of talent’, which contained fellow champions and Pound For Pound rated fighters.
Ireland’s newest boxing title holder won the award after she defeated Catherine Phiri in Zambia to claim the World strap.
The 40 year old traveled to Phiri’s home country for the bout, with little notice or notoriety, and had to fight the altitude affects over 10 rounds, yet secured an against the odds win.
McMahon now hopes to announce a homecoming bout over the next few weeks and looks set to bring World championships boxing back to Monaghan.
