McKenna Brothers link up with top U.S. trainer
Aaron and Stevie McKenna have linked up with one of the top trainers in world boxing as they look to convert their title potential into belts.
It has been confirmed that the Monaghan brothers have come under the control of three-time Ring Magazine Trainer of the Year Robert Garcia at his famous gym in Oxnard, California.
Welterweight Aaron [8(5)-0] and lightweight Stevie [2(2)-0] have been based in Santa Monica, California for the past two years as they look to . transisition to the pros, training under South African Courage Tshabalala and their father, Fergal.
This team will stay together, with Garcia joining in.
The Mexican-American has trained a total of 12 fighters to world title honours – including four-weight champs Nonito Donaire and Mikey Garcia, his younger brother, as well as two-time Floyd Mayweather opponent Marcos Maidana.
Garcia boasts a busy gym currently including the aforementioned Mikey, top prospect Vergil Ortiz, and WBC light welter champ Jose Ramirez.
A former fighter himself, Garcia held the IBF super featherweight title back in the late 1990s.
The McKennas are both managed by Sheer Sports, with Aaron also promoted by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.
The younger McKenna, 20-year-old Aaron, returns to the ring this day next week at the Fantasy Springs Casino on the Jason Quigley v Tureano Johnson undercard.
22-year-old Stevie is currently awaiting a new date.
