McEwan welcomes support

10 February 2011

As unbeaten Scottish middleweight prospect Craig McEwan prepares for his March 12 showdown with Irishman Andy Lee, he has spoken about being “overwhelmed” by the messages of support which have been flooding in via on-line message, email and letter.

” I`ve developed quite a cosmopolitan fan base over the four and a half years I`ve been fighting out of The Wildcard Gym in Hollywood, but this bout with Andy Lee really seems to have captured peoples` imagination. Its been a great boost to come home after a gruelling day`s training to messages of support from all over the world. It`s not just Scotland, they`ve been flooding in from everywhere, The Philipines, Mexico, Australia and even Ireland!”

And McEwan is equally delighted with the way his training camp has been going. “I`ve been getting good work with a strong Mexican called Robert Garcia who recently went the distance with Toni Margarito and I`ll soon be starting sparring with Serhiy Dzinziruk, who is taking on Sergio Martinez for the vacant WBC Diamond Middleweight title on the same bill, ” says the affable Scot. “For once I`ve had no distractions for my preparations and everything is going really well. I`ve also been getting fantastic strength and fitness work with Mike Vale, The Wildcard`s new conditioning coach”

McEwan`s upbeat analysis was backed up by his trainer, the legendary Freddy Roach, who has mentored the Edinburgh fighter to an unblemished 19-0-0 record since he turned pro in 2006, ” Craig is really hungry for this one and has been working very hard. We`re still at the start of his training camp but he`s looking very good. By the time we hit Foxwoods in March I expect him to be fitter and stronger than he`s ever been. He`ll beat this guy.”

The bout takes place at the Foxwoods Casino, Mashentucket, Connecticut and will be televised live on HBO.
