McDonagh enters Prizefighter

9 May 2011 – Jonny Stapleton

Peter McDonagh becomes the latest Irish Prizefighter hopeful, as The Connemara Kid was named in the list for The Welterweight II tournament set to take place in the York Hall on Tuesday June 7.

McDonagh will be hoping to emulate previous winners who fought under the Irish banner and announce himself on the big time with victory in the quick fire tournament.

However if the Bermondsey native, who once lost to former Paul McCloskey foe Giuseppe Lauri in an EU title fight, is to emulate Martin Rogan, Willie Casey and Mike Perez by lifting the prestigious trophy he will have to successfully navigate a land mine filled welterweight field. Former WBC light-welterweight champion Witter and the man he defeated to retain his Commonwealth, European and British titles, former IBO World, British and European champ Colin Lynes are the two biggest names on the action packed and unique fight card.

Former British champion Kevin McIntyre, unbeaten prospects John Wayne Hibbert (Essex) and Bobby Gladman (Cheshunt), popular north London-based Moroccan Yassine El Maachi and Aylesburys Nathan Graham complete the line-up for the 19th edition of Matchroom Sports eight-man, one night tournaments.
