McCrory in Perez’s corner

Gary Hyde has confirmed that Glenn McCrory will be in Mike Perez’s corner for Saturday’s clash with Harry Duiven in Cork.

Cuban heavyweight Perez, who is now based in Ireland, is widely regarded as a fighter of real potential and impressed former cruiserweight world champion McCrory upon a recent visit to England.

Indeed, Perez and his compatriots Luis Garcia and Alexei Acosta are to train in McCrory’s gym in Newcastle for future fights.

Unsurprisingly, Hyde, who looks after the Cuban trio, is thrilled by the link-up with Sky Sports boxing analyst McCrory.

“This is a huge honour,” Hyde is quoted as saying by the Irish Examiner.

“Glenn is a household name and the fact that he is now part of our team is very exciting.

“He will be joined by Bernard Checa from Argentina in the corner and Tony Dunlop, who is a very important member of the team.

“Glenn is a huge fan of Cuban boxing and the plan is to have the Cubans living in Cork and training in Newcastle. They will be kept quite busy – boxing every three weeks and alternating between Newcastle and Ireland.

“It is difficult not to be excited about the Cubans. They have beaten all three Cuban medallists from the Beijing Olympics and we have taken them across to England where they have sparred with the best over there and come out on top each time.”

Super-middleweight starlet Garcia is to fight Lithuanian Mantas Tarvydas on this weekend’s bill in Cork, while Acosta’s opponent for his scheduled six-round bantamweight contest has yet to be announced.
