Belfast Cruiserweight Tommy McCarthy could be set for a crack at either the British, Commonwealth or European titles in the new year.

Big punching McCarthy will fight twice in the next week and according to manager Pat Magee, that will put the former Senior Champion in line for a crack at a European title next year.

In order to be eligible to fight for the European crown a fighter must have eight bouts under his belt and with McCarthy currently on six ahead of Saturday’s televised bout, Magee wants him out again a week later to put him on the eight required for a title shot.

The British and Commonwealth titles are also possibilities for McCarthy, with the British Board meeting next week to discuss eliminator bouts and Magee is confident that McCarthy will be one of the names in the frame for a shot.

Speaking to Irish-boxing.com Magee said “In order for Tommy to be eligible for a European title shot he has to have fought eight times so the idea is to get two more fights under his belt before Christmas and then look at our options in the new year. If all goes well this Saturday he will be out again next Saturday. The British Board are also meeting next Wednesday and eliminators for the British and Commonwealth titles will be discussed and we expect Tommy to be in the mix there also.”
