Tommy McCarthy [9(5)-0] has won round one of his British cruiserweight title final eliminator with Matty Askin [20(13)-3(1)-1].

McCarthy’s manager Pat Magee has won the purse bids for the clash that was ordered to take place by the BBBoC in the aftermath of The Mac-Attack’s career-best win over Jon-Lewis Dickinson live on Sky Sports in May.

The veteran Belfast promoter and manager, who also looks after the career of Philip Sutcliffe Jr, is now exploring promotional options, and will confirm where and when the bout will take place over the next two weeks.

McCarthy and the current English champion will be quite familiar with each other having sparred plenty in the past.

Magee expects the clash to play out in September, and is hopeful that the 25 year old former Elite Senior champion will fight for the British title by year’s end.

“Purse bids were won today for Tommy McCarthy versus Matty Askins by myself,” Magee told Irish-boxing.com.

“We are now in negotiations and will have a date and venue announced within two weeks.”
