Martinez to take the Hy road if he wins in Belfast

July 29

KIKO Martinez wants to give Paulie Hyland a second chance at continental glory and will put his European title on the line against the Dubliner if he defeats Carl Frampton in the Odyssey Arena on September 10.

The three time EBU champion is keen to add to his list of Irish victims and will target the man, who filled in for the Spaniard when he pulled out of his fight with Willie Casey last November.

The fighter, who boasts a sensational win over Irish boxing legend Bernard Dunne, claims the real Paulie Hyland wasn’t on display in the first ever European Irish title fight in Limerick last year and his representative Joe Forbes revealed the youngest of the three champion brothers in on ’Mini Tyson’s’ radar.

Rumours that Martinez’s promoter Brian Peters is planning a double Hyland European title tilt early in the new year have began to grow legs of late.

And on hearing the hearsay Forbes stressed Team Martinez would ‘recommend’ the Irish promoter makes the fight they believe should have happened previously. However the translator only afforded himself a temporary glance down the road and has continually stated he believes the Martinez Frampton scrap is going to a closely fought duel of the highest quality.

“ I believe that the winner of the September 10 bout could take on Paulie Hyland. We would not be against that at all as we believe that when Paulie fought Willie he did not fight the fight he should have done. Kiko and myself believe Paulie is better than that display suggests. If we beat Carl Frampton we will fight Paulie as long as a deal can be made. That fight should have happened a long time ago and we would definitely recommend it to Mr Peters.”
