Previously-announced Marco McCullough v Josh Warrington clash not happening

Belfast’s Marco McCullough [16(10)-3(2)] will not fight Josh Warrington in Leeds this coming May.

Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions announced last month that the Shankill feather, who currently holds the WBO Inter-Continental title, would face new glamour signing Warrington at the First Direct Arena in Leeds, live on Boxnation and BT Sports, on Saturday May 13th.

This will not be the case however, with Queensberry making an error and announcing McCullough as the opponent despite the Ulsterman having not yet signed a contract and subsequently turning down the offer on the advice of his team.

McCullough told Irish-Boxing.com and explained that “I was offered the fight, and being a fighter I would fight anyone.”

The always-honest 27 year old recalled how “I had a chat with the team and they thought it wasn’t the right fight to take at this time. To be honest they thought, right now, with the bad habits I have, Josh Warrington would beat me.”

Warrington now looks set to fight former IBF super bantamweight champion Kiko Martínez in the headline fight on the bill. Also featuring will be the Leeds homecoming of double Olympic gold medalist Nicola Adams, and a clash between Crumlin light welter Phil Sutcliffe Jr and Middlesbrough prospect Josh Leather.

MTK’s McCullough will still feature at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast on Saturday February 18th where he will look to build upon his exciting win over Luis Lugo.
